Chapmans Off-Road Racing

The gruelling sport of Off-Road Racing is a growing phenomenon around the world. During these multi day races, cars and buggies are put to the ultimate test of endurance.

The suspension, engines and finer components are constantly challenged with high RPM, rough terrain and long straightaways day after day. The gruelling sport requires many repair jobs over the stages of the race. Therefore, also necessary is a team who are equipped to deal with these challenges on-the-fly.

In the Australian Off-Road Racing scene, this team is often a close-knit group of family and friends.

One well established family in the scene is that of the Chapman family based in Cooroy, Queensland. The Chapman’s have seven cars in their family team.

Mum and Dad, Rob and Leila, who started the family business Chapmans Auto Repairs 22 years ago, drive Extreme 4WD Pajero’s. Father Rob won the Production 4WD National Championship in 2012 and Leila’s vehicle is a twin turbo 3L V6 engine, meaning they are no slouches!

Oldest son Clayton has won multiple Australian Championships in the 4WD classes. This year he has made the change to a Razorback buggy built by the Off-Road Shop. Powered by a 2JZ engine (yes, you read that correct!) it produces 500 whp using a Gt35 76 Gen2 Garret turbo and runs on E85 fuel. Controlled by a Link Fury ECU, this is one mean machine to try navigating difficult, dusty off-road surfaces in. Clayton and his co-driver Adam are in their first season with the buggy this year. At the Queensland championship they finished first outright and first in the buggy class.

Check out the buggy being tuned here:

Clayton’s younger brother Stuart and Navigator Michael team up in the Extreme 4WD EVO X powered Triton. This vehicle also runs a Fury ECU and runs E85, producing 400whp.

The team is completed with Rob and Leila’s two daughters Emma and Larissa driving a Production 4WD Class Triton and Pajero each.

Away from the circuit, the family operate Chapmans Auto Repairs and Chapmans Auto Electrical.

Rob and Clayton also specialise in dyno tuning under the banner of Chapmans Performance Dyno-tuning, having upgraded to a 4-wheel Dyno Dynamics dyno in 2013.

The team love Link ECU’s because they see great results while tuning performance engines and have complete control over all features within the engine.

The goal for the whole team is to keep enjoying the races while raising the profile of the sport in Australia. Clayton, being the competitive one, will certainly be looking to claim another Australian Championship title in the buggy in the near future!

Link ECU wishes the team all the best for the rest of the 2019 season.

Winning weekend for Link ECU

What a weekend it was for Link Legends across the globe! Link ECU powered cars proved victorious in various events and disciplines, from the USA to Ireland.

In Washington, USA, Formula Drift was in town for Round Five of the 2019 competition.

Link ECU sponsored Drift Pilot’s James Deane and Piotr Wiecek stole the show for the weekend. The Worthouse Drift team Drivers topped the charts in QuMalifying, taking first and second spots respectively. The Duo then went on to duke it out in the final battles for the weekend, too. What a Final it was!

In the end, the judging panel (and crowd) awarded Polish Sensation Piotr with the Win; his first victory in Formula Drift.

Both James and Piotr’s 2JZ powered S15s are controlled by the Link Thunder ECU. The cars also feature a Link MXS Strada dash each, to ensure the Drivers have engine information and warning signals displayed in the cockpit.

On the other side of the world, some more Elite Drifters were in action at Mondello Park at the Drift Games Xtreme series. The Driver line-up included Link ECU sponsored Brothers Jack and Conor Shanahan. The Shanahan’s debuted new cars this season, with Jack driving a 2JZ powered Toyota 86 and Conor in a 2JZ S15. The pair have been focusing on the Drift Masters European Championship this year, but decided to do yet another round of Drift Games closer to home for some more seat time. It sure paid off! The younger of the brothers, Conor, took his first professional victory in Ireland on a wet and wild circuit!

This now means Conor has won Pro events in the UK, Ireland and Europe.

Jack narrowly finished second after an equally spectacular final between the two team mates!

Jack and Conor’s cars utilise the Link Fury ECU and an extensive accessories package.

Congratulations to Alan Hynes who managed to complete a full Link ECU podium lock out!

However, Drifting was just one discipline where Link ECU succeeds.

In Jordan this past weekend: Link ECU Dealer NMK Performance set the world Record for the highest Horsepower M50:

And, back in the USA, RalyGrl Amanda Skelly and Co-driver Sarah Freeze won their class in the New England Forest Rally in her ’97 Subaru Impreza:

True Champions. Well Done All!

Formula Drift Hits Season Mid-point

Formula Drift is now in its sixteenth season of competition, with more competitors and spectators relishing the sport than ever before in the USA. Live audiences of over 20,000 people have been present at events this year, rooting on some of the Biggest Names in the sport as they battle door-to-door sideways at high speeds.

Formula Drift Livestream footage also ensures that Fans from all over the world can tune in to the battles. Whether cheering on their Hometown Heroes, or the Greats like James Deane, Global Audiences have been captivated by the action this year; totalling to over 20 million Livestream Minutes watched per event.

As the cars get more powerful and the top drivers get more experience, the competition is certainly peaking amongst the 36 professional FD Drift Pilots.

Norweigen Frederic Asabo is leading the current points standings in his Toyota Corolla. Safe to say, its not the same spec Toyota Corolla your Mum takes to the Supermarket!

Two Times Defending Champion James Deane has suffered from some bad luck this season in his 2JZ S15. He currently sits fifth in the points. With such great driver skill, and the Worthouse Drift Team behind him, you would never count him out from making a comeback to the Top of the points standings however.

Jame’s teammate, Piotr Wiecek, is returning to the USA this week fresh off the back of a podium finish at his home round of the Drift Masters European Championship in Plock, Poland. Along with the likes of Justin Pawlak and Daijiro Yoshihara who are also yet to stand on the Formula Drift podium this season, he is one determined Driver ready to give 100%.

As the Championship heads into Round 5 this weekend in Monroe, Washington, there is a lot at stake.

It’s no wonder the Top Driver’s and Teams are putting so much work into their cars. This year, Link ECU is proud to support an outstanding line up of what we like to name: ‘Link Legends’. These Driver’s use not only a Link G4+ ECU in their competition car, but also our accessories and dash displays as they compete at the elite level of Drift competition. Lets have a look at them:

Worthouse Drift Team

Worthouse Drivers, James and Piotr, currently sit fifth and sixth in the Championship respectively.

The season has been as busy as ever for the pair, who have been not only been competing across America but also in Europe. While James is completing the entire DMEC series, Piotr simply made a wildcard appearance at his home round in Plock, Poland. Driving his 2018 FD Competition car, Piotr came SO CLOSE to winning the round. In the final battles he narrowly missed out on the win and had to settle for second behind his fellow countryman Pawel Borkowski.

After a rough start to the season, James has made his way back on the podium at the last two rounds in Atlanta and New Jersey. We expect to see him back on the Top Step again very soon!

The Worthouse team cars feature Link Thunder ECU’s, as well as a Link MXS Dash and accessories such as three channel ignitors. The pair of 2JZ S15’s put out over 1000hp each and are clearly a couple of the tidiest vehicles in the FD paddock.

Justin Pawlak JTP

Justin Pawlak is another regular at the top of the Judge’s Scorecards.  This season, he is sitting 9th overall in the standings. Known for his aggressive yet smooth driving style, his Ford Mustang sounds amazing as it absolutely roars around the circuits.

JTP has done all his own mechanical, fabrication and suspension work. His self-built 2019 ROUSH Supercharged Mustang with a Ford Performance Aluminator crate engine. The race car pushes out almost 1,000 horsepower and 831 lb-ft of torque.

Matt Field

Matt stunned on-lookers at the opening round of the season in Long Beach when he made a statement by taking Pole Position.

His vehicle is a fresh build this season. It features an LS based engine, with a RHS block built by CVM Motorsports. A Vortec supercharger, plus nitrous and a dry sump set-up all contribute to this Beast putting out 1080 Horsepower to the wheels. The Corvette utilises the Link Thunder ECU to put the control of the engine in his Team’s hands. Matt was very impressed with how smooth the engine runs after installing and tuning the Link equipment this season.

Pat Goodin

Florida native, Pat is making his return to FD this season after taking a year off. He is partnered up with Matt Field and the Drift Cave Team, driving Matt’s S14. Pat is one talented Driver and it’s fair to say everyone is pleased to have him back in FD.

Pat’s S14 is powered by a 408ci LS with a Vortec Supercharger, producing 985 whp.

Jeff Jones

Jeff is the wild character of the FD paddock, always having a laugh! He has risen through the rankings over the years, coming from amateur Drift series, to PRO 2 (where he finished 2nd) and then into the FD PRO category.

Jeff’s 370Z is fitted with a LS V8 engine.  The team has been using PC Link software over the past two seasons to dial his engine in each weekend. The torque from this engine is phenomenal, with over 800 lb-ft of torque.

With four rounds of the 2019 Formula Drift Championship still remaining, anything can still happen for all of these Drivers! We wish everyone Good Luck for this weekend in Monroe, Washington. #TeamLink for the win 👊

Exhilaration starts here!
